Journal History
The Journal of African Trade was established to help address the perennial concern of African policy makers, researchers, trade development centres, export promotion agencies, and international trade practitioners, among others, interested in the development of African trade, regarding the lack and/or limited availability of credible trade data, information and in-depth research on issues relating to the promotion and financing of African trade. The required data and other relevant information range from issues concerning the development of major commodity of trade interest to Africa, diversification of exports in terms of products and geography, identification of new markets, potential impact of economic agreements, emerging opportunities on intra- African trade, among other key trade-related subjects about which reliable information is needed for informed decision-making by policy makers, trade financiers and African traders. There is also an abundance of trade and trade finance issues which are clouded in uncertainty due to limited research that can shed light on them. Hence, in pursuit of its mission of being “the centre of excellence in African trade matters”, and cognisant of the importance to contribute towards narrowing the gap in the collation and dissemination of accurate trade information and statistics and publication of cutting-edge research on trade-related issues of interest to Africa, Afreximbank launched the Journal of African Trade in 2014 as an independently managed peer-reviewed journal, with the maiden issue published in December of the same year.
